Frequently Asked Questions

Find the answer to the most commonly asked questions about the lottery.

Why is Wakefield Hospice part of Unity Lottery?

From 2007 to 2015 we ran an independent lottery here at Wakefield Hospice. As the membership levels grew so did our overhead costs, including staff time to administer the weekly work. We recognised that it would be more cost effective to join Unity Lottery to increase the amount contributed each year to patient care. In addition to this it allowed us to offer much greater prizes (our jackpot jumped from £1,000 per week to £25,000!) to our players.

The decision proved successful as our profits increased from £30,000 to £50,000 in just two years!

How does the lottery work?

Each week your personal 6-digit lottery number (issued by Unity Lottery when you sign-up) is entered into a draw and the winning numbers are chosen at random.

You can purchase as many numbers as you wish for £1 each, giving you even more chances to win a number of great prizes.

Any prizes you win are issued and posted directly to you; there’s no need for you to claim. You can cancel at any time if you don’t want to remain in the draw.

How old do I have to be to enter?

You must be aged 16 or over to enter the lottery.

Can I choose my own lottery numbers?

These are chosen randomly and will be your numbers for the duration of your membership of our lottery. When you enter the lottery, you will be sent your unique numbers.

How much does Wakefield Hospice make from my membership?

On average Wakefield Hospice receives 54p out of every £1 membership. However the more members we have, the greater this amount becomes – we also benefit financially from all three number match wins (as detailed below).

The remaining amount goes towards the prize fund (18.4%) and the costs towards administering the lottery (27.6%).

Why is the price £4.34 per month when paying by Direct Debit?

The monthly cost breakdown of £4.34 for playing the lottery is based on paying £1 per week over a 52 week year. As Direct debits are only collected once monthly, sometimes there will be five weeks in a month and the additional £0.34p is to build up credit to cover the fifth week on the five-week months

How will I know if I'm in the draw?

Within 21 days of registration you will receive a confirmation letter which contains details of your unique lottery number(s) and the date of the first draw your tickets are entered into. You will be entered into the draw when you have monies available and you will continue to be entered into the draw as long as you have monies available against your lottery number.

How will I know if I've won?

Once the draw has taken place, winners are notified by post. There is no need to claim your prize as this is sent straight to your address!

If I win, does this cost the hospice?

No - in actual fact the opposite can be true…which is exactly why we want you to win!

The three match win:

Every time a Wakefield Hospice Unity Lottery member has a three digit match YOU receive five extra chances in the following weeks draw (seriously increasing your odds of winning a greater prize the next week!) WE receive a donation of £2.50 from Unity Lottery. This is at no extra cost to either our members or Wakefield Hospice!

The more players we have, the more three match win donations we’ll receive and is one of the many reasons why we’d be lucky to have you as a member!

If you win £25, £1,000 or even hit the jackpot £25,000 it won’t cost us a penny!
